Quick Answer: Can you withdraw your PF through UPI or an ATM today? No — not yet. As of 4 November 2026, UPI and ATM withdrawals are still being tested, with no official go-live date announced. What is live today is auto-settlement of advance claims up to ₹5 lakh, usually within three days, with no human involvement.
Headlines saying you can withdraw your provident fund from an ATM or through UPI are ahead of the facts. The idea is real and testing is under way, with the facility expected by end December 2026 — but it is not live, and EPFO has announced no go-live date. What already works matters more: a new scheme since 29 June 2026, auto-settlement up to ₹5 lakh, and interest at 8.25% for a third straight year.
What's live vs what's a promise
Status today: • Auto-settlement up to ₹5 lakh — LIVE. Advance claims for illness, education, marriage, housing; usually settled within three days, no human involvement. • EPF Scheme, 2026 — LIVE. In force since 29 June 2026; 13 withdrawal types merged into one framework; uniform 12 months' service. • EPF interest 8.25% for FY 2025-26 — LIVE. Third straight year at 8.25%; credited to around 34 crore accounts by 15 July 2026. • Wage ceiling ₹25,000 a month — LIVE. Up from ₹15,000; Cabinet approval 16 September 2026, effective 17 September 2026. • UPI withdrawal — TESTING, NOT LIVE. Bank testing started early October 2026; no go-live date announced. • ATM withdrawal — TESTING, NOT LIVE. Testing reported early October 2026; no go-live date announced. • EPF-linked ATM card — REPORTED, UNCONFIRMED. Not confirmed by EPFO. EPFO covers 30 crore+ member accounts; its corpus was ₹28.37 lakh crore in March 2025. A change of this size moves in stages — which is why testing matters more than headlines. The ₹5 lakh auto-settlement you can use today
This is the EPFO 3.0 benefit to use this week, because it already works. Need an advance for illness, education, marriage or housing? Claims up to ₹5 lakh are auto-settled — usually within three days, with no human involvement. The limit rose from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh (PIB, 24 June 2025). In FY 2024-25, 2.34 crore advance claims were auto-settled, up 161% year on year — the system working at full volume, not a pilot. A genuine emergency — a hospital bill, a child's admission fee, a family wedding — no longer waits for a file to move across desks. File through the UAN portal, and keep UAN, Aadhaar, bank and KYC details updated: a mismatch is the most common reason a claim stalls. The new EPF Scheme 2026 rules: what changed on 29 June 2026
The EPF Scheme, 2026 came into force on 29 June 2026, merging 13 partial-withdrawal types into one framework with a uniform 12-month service requirement. For specified needs, you can withdraw up to 100% of the eligible balance — but 25% of contributions must stay as a minimum balance. That retention rule is the published scheme rule. Reports differ on the UPI/ATM channel cap (around 50% in some reports, up to 75% in most), so treat no single channel limit as fact: the channel-specific limit is not yet officially published. The EPF rate is 8.25% for FY 2025-26, recommended by the Central Board of Trustees on 2 March 2026 and ratified in June 2026. The PPF rate of 7.1% for October–December 2026 is a separate scheme — do not mix the two.How the UPI/ATM withdrawal is expected to work
Nothing here is official yet — this is a reported picture of what testing aims at, not instructions to follow today. The reported route: link the UAN portal to your UPI account, select an amount, authenticate with your UPI PIN or Aadhaar OTP, and the money goes to your linked bank account. No employer approval would be needed; NPCI is the integration partner. UPI testing with banks started around 7 October 2026; ATM testing was reported around 8 October 2026. A senior government official told Moneycontrol the facility is expected by end December 2026 (via Jagran Josh, October 2026) — a reported expectation, not a launch date. EPFO has announced no go-live date, so treat December as a hope, not a deadline.Worked example: Priya's ₹6 lakh balance
Take Priya, a salaried employee with an EPF balance of ₹6,00,000. Figures are illustrative. Under the 25% retention rule, ₹1,50,000 must stay. Up to ₹4,50,000 could be withdrawn for an eligible need — 75%, a reported figure, not a confirmed channel limit. The ₹1,50,000 left behind earns 8.25%, or ₹12,375 a year. A ₹10,00,000 balance would earn ₹82,500 a year at the same rate, before withdrawals. On a ₹30,000 basic salary, her 12% share is ₹3,600 a month; the employer's EPF share adds ₹2,350 (12% of basic minus the 8.33% EPS share on the ₹15,000 ceiling). Together: ₹5,950 a month, about ₹71,400 a year, into her EPF. Every withdrawal today is interest forgone tomorrow. What to do today — and what not to wait for
Do not wait for UPI or ATM withdrawals to sort out a genuine need. Use the live route: check UAN, Aadhaar, bank and KYC details match, then file an advance claim for up to ₹5 lakh through the UAN portal. Keep the rest working. At 8.25%, EPF remains one of the strongest assured-return options for salaried employees, and the 25% rule means a withdrawal never empties the account. Before withdrawing, ask whether the need is eligible and whether a smaller amount would do. Do not plan spending or a purchase around a December UPI launch: no date has been announced, the cap is unpublished, and the ATM card is unconfirmed. Until EPFO announces the go-live, the cap and the steps in one official update, use what is live and protect the 25%.Can I withdraw my PF through UPI or an ATM today?
