Why did Siemens profit rise only 5% when orders jumped 38%? New orders of ₹6,228 crore reflect future work, not this quarter's earnings. Revenue did grow 17% to ₹5,734 crore, but higher material costs from commodity-price and foreign-exchange volatility squeezed margins, so net profit rose only about 5% to ₹504 crore.
Orders surged — the headline number
Siemens Ltd reported Q2 FY27 results on Friday 6 November 2026, for the quarter ended 30 September 2026. New orders: ₹6,228 crore, up 37.8% from ₹4,519 crore a year ago. Orders are work won but not yet delivered. Siemens' order backlog — work already won and waiting to be executed — stood at ₹47,034 crore, up 12% year on year. MD & CEO Sunil Mathur said growth was driven by continued infrastructure capital expenditure and rising private-sector capital expenditure. Siemens shares ended Friday 6 November at ₹3,555.00 on BSE, up ₹131.95 or 3.85% on the day.Revenue grew 17% — so why did profit barely move?
Revenue from operations rose 17.0% to ₹5,734 crore, from ₹4,900 crore a year ago. Yet consolidated net profit rose only 4.78% to ₹504 crore, from ₹481 crore. One clarification: the company statement, reported via Economic Times and PTI, puts the year-ago profit at ₹481 crore. Some live blogs cited ₹485 crore instead. This article uses the company-statement base and calls the rise "about 5%" throughout. The gap is the story of this quarter: margins — the share of each rupee of sales that survives as profit after costs. EBITDA rose only 2.8% to ₹626 crore, from ₹609 crore, and its margin fell to 10.9% from 12.4%. Profit from operations fell to ₹545 crore from ₹561 crore, and the operating margin narrowed to 9.5% from 11.4%. Siemens sold a lot more, but kept less of each sale. The cost squeeze behind the margin contraction
Mr Mathur said profitability was under pressure mainly from commodity-price and foreign-exchange volatility, which pushed material costs higher. Siemens buys metals, components and other inputs, some priced in foreign currencies. When commodity prices rise, or the rupee moves against those currencies, input costs climb. If the company cannot pass the full increase on immediately — because contracts were signed earlier, or competition limits price rises — margins shrink even while sales grow. Smart Infrastructure, the largest segment, shows the demand side: revenue of ₹3,281 crore, up from ₹2,725 crore a year ago. Demand is strong; the pressure sits on the cost line, not the demand line. The backlog in plain arithmetic
The backlog of ₹47,034 crore is often quoted without context. The arithmetic below uses reported figures only — it is not a forecast. ₹47,034 crore ÷ ₹5,734 crore ≈ 8.2 — the backlog is about 8.2 times one quarter's revenue, roughly eight quarters of work at the current run-rate, before new orders. Two cautions apply. A run-rate is not a promise: execution depends on project timelines and the capacity to deliver. And backlog value is not profit — the same cost pressures that squeezed this quarter's margins will apply to delivering that backlog too, unless input costs ease or pricing improves. Read the backlog as visibility, not guaranteed earnings.Orders vs revenue vs profit — a framework for 7 November 2026
Read the three headline numbers as three different things. This framework is dated 7 November 2026. • Orders are a leading indicator — demand today for work delivered later. A 38% jump says customers are committing to future spending. • Revenue is current activity — what was delivered and billed in the quarter. The 17% rise says execution kept pace with demand. • Profit is what survives costs — earnings after materials, currency effects and other expenses. The roughly 5% rise says costs ate most of the extra sales. The three can move in different directions in the same quarter because they measure different stages of one business. Strong orders with weak profit is not a contradiction. It is a company winning work in a costlier environment. The first half tells the same story: H1 FY27 revenue from continuing operations rose to ₹10,448 crore, from ₹9,008 crore, but profit from operations fell to ₹901 crore, from ₹1,013 crore, and profit before tax from continuing operations fell to ₹1,138 crore, from ₹1,226 crore. What to watch next
First, whether material costs and currency volatility ease — if commodity prices settle, margins can recover without any change in demand. Second, whether Siemens can pass costs through in new contracts. Third, how fast the backlog converts into revenue: a large backlog supports future sales only if projects move ahead on schedule. None of this is a call to buy, sell or hold the shares. Orders told one story this quarter, margins told another, and both were true at the same time. Educational content only — not financial advice.
