Patterns the pros watch
- TIP 01
Co-brand cards concentrate value
Cards tied to Amazon, Flipkart or Swiggy pay their best rates inside that ecosystem and revert to 1–1.5% elsewhere.
- TIP 02
Caps decide the ceiling
A 5% rate with a ₹500/month cap pays at most ₹6,000 a year no matter how much you spend in that category.
- TIP 03
Cashback form matters
Statement credit is the most flexible; wallet-locked cashback (e.g. Amazon Pay balance) only spends in one place.
- TIP 04
Interest wipes out rewards
Revolving a balance at 36–42% p.a. destroys any reward math — cards only pay off when the full statement is cleared monthly.
Questions people ask
Q01How do credit card reward rates actually work?+30
Banks advertise a headline rate (often 5–10%) on specific categories and a lower base rate (usually 1–1.5%) on everything else. The headline rate almost always comes with caps — monthly or quarterly ceilings — and exclusions such as fuel, rent, insurance, wallet loads and government payments, which often earn zero rewards.
Q02Is a lifetime-free card better than a paid card?+30
It depends on your spending volume and pattern, not on the fee alone. A paid card whose accelerated categories match your largest monthly outflows can return more than its fee even after caps; a free card with a category you rarely use returns little. Calculate the effective reward on your own past spending before choosing.
Q03What are fee-waiver spends?+30
Many cards waive the annual fee if your yearly spending crosses a threshold — commonly ₹1–2 lakh for the cards above. Check whether the bank counts all spends or excludes categories like fuel and rent; waiver math only works if your natural spending clears the bar.
Q04Do reward points expire?+30
Often, yes. Points-based cards typically give points a 1–3 year validity, while direct cashback cards (statement credit or wallet credit) usually have no expiry on the credited amount. Unredeemed expired points are simply lost.
Q05Will applying for multiple cards hurt my credit score?+30
Each application triggers a hard enquiry on your credit report, and several in a short period can lower your score and signal credit hunger to lenders. Space out applications and apply only for cards whose reward pattern fits spending you already do.
