Personal Loan EMI Calculator: ₹5 Lakh Loan, Real EMI Cost
A ₹5 lakh personal loan at 11% for 5 years costs ₹10,871 a month and ₹1,52,273 in interest. Work out your EMI, total cost and the tenure trap before you apply.
Quick Answer: A ₹5 lakh personal loan at an assumed 11% for five years costs ₹10,871 a month and ₹1,52,273 in interest — ₹6,52,273 in total. Shortening it to three years raises the EMI to ₹16,369 but cuts interest to ₹89,297. Check the EMI, total cost, fee and prepayment rule before applying.
What the EMI formula actually does
Your EMI is not the loan divided by the months. Interest is charged monthly on the balance still outstanding, so early EMIs are mostly interest and later EMIs mostly principal — which is why a longer tenure feels cheaper monthly while costing far more overall. The formula is EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where r is the monthly rate and n is the number of months.
Worked example: Priya's ₹5 lakh loan
Priya, 29, earns ₹60,000 a month and borrows ₹5 lakh for a renovation at 11% for five years. Her numbers are:
• EMI: ₹10,871 a month for 60 months.
• Total paid: ₹6,52,273.
• Total interest: ₹1,52,273 — about 30% on top of the amount borrowed.
• EMI per ₹1 lakh: ₹2,174 a month at this rate and tenure.
• In today's money: at an assumed 6% inflation, those payments are worth about ₹5,62,320 in today's rupees.
Priya's EMI is about 18% of her monthly income, leaving room for rent, expenses and savings. At 40% or more of take-home pay, a loan is affordable on paper and fragile in real life — one delayed salary away from a missed payment.

The tenure trap: cheaper monthly, dearer overall
Same ₹5 lakh at an assumed 11%:
• 3 years: EMI ₹16,369 a month, total interest ₹89,297, total paid ₹5,89,297.
• 5 years: EMI ₹10,871 a month, total interest ₹1,52,273, total paid ₹6,52,273.
• 7 years: EMI ₹8,561 a month, total interest ₹2,19,142, total paid ₹7,19,142.
Stretching from three years to seven almost halves the EMI but adds ₹1,29,845 in interest. That is the tenure trap: lenders advertise the monthly figure, borrowers pay the total. Pick the shortest tenure you can pay comfortably, including in a bad month.
Rates in November 2026: what "from 9.99%" really means
Comparison pages updated 3 November 2026 put starting rates from 9.99% a year, with State Bank of India from 10% and processing up to 1.5% of the loan amount. Axis Bank's festive offer, reported 3 November 2026, starts at 9.99% with fees from ₹999. Treat every "from" rate as a best-case figure for strong credit profiles, not a promise: your actual rate depends on your credit score, income and employer. On Priya's ₹5 lakh over five years, the EMI is ₹10,747 at 10.5%, ₹10,871 at 11%, ₹11,377 at 13% and ₹11,895 at 15% — a 4-point gap adds ₹1,024 a month and ₹61,425 in interest. Compare the rate you are actually offered, not the advertised rate.
The costs the calculator does not show
A calculator shows principal and interest, not the rest of the bill. Check these four before signing:
• Processing fee: typically up to 2% of the loan amount, plus GST. At 2%, Priya pays ₹10,000 upfront, taking her true cost to ₹1,62,273 including interest.
• Prepayment and foreclosure charges: some lenders charge for early closure, wiping out the saving from repaying early. Ask for the exact percentage and lock-in period in writing.
• Late-payment and bounce charges: a missed EMI adds fees and can hurt your credit score, raising the cost of your next loan too.
• Insurance bundled with the loan: a loan-protection policy is optional, not compulsory. If added to your EMI, ask what it costs and whether you can decline it.
A slightly higher rate with no prepayment charge can beat a lower rate you cannot exit early.
A framework for choosing your tenure
Score any offer on three weights, dated 3 November 2026:
• Monthly affordability (40%): can you pay the EMI for the full tenure, in a bad month, without touching your emergency fund?
• Total cost (35%): EMI × months, plus processing fee and GST — the lowest total, not the lowest EMI, wins.
• Flexibility (25%): can you prepay without a heavy charge, and change tenure if your income changes?
If it wins on affordability but loses on total cost, shorten the tenure or borrow less. If it wins on total cost but leaves no buffer, it is not affordable.
When a personal loan is the wrong tool
A personal loan is unsecured, so it costs more than a secured loan. Before applying, check a home-loan top-up, a loan against a fixed deposit or mutual funds (usually cheaper, though it puts that asset at risk), or simply waiting and saving for a short, small gap. A personal loan fits a one-off, planned expense repaid from regular income — not recurring spending, stock-market bets, or repaying another unaffordable loan.
