SEBI's Secret Is Out Today: What Your Broker Must Now Show You Every Time You Log In
SEBI's Project Jagrook is live today: brokers must show investor-awareness messages on websites now, apps from Nov 1. What changes and tools to know.

All weekend, something strange happened on social media. AMFI nudged BSE about a SEBI investor-awareness initiative. BSE said it was "going to simplify something." NSE, MCX, CDSL, NSDL and NISM joined the chain — each dropping a hint, none revealing anything. Finally, SEBI's own awareness handle said: "Patience, everyone. By this time tomorrow, the mystery will be over."
That tomorrow is today — Monday, October 5, 2026. And the substance behind the teaser is a real SEBI circular: from today, every stock broker in India must start displaying SEBI's investor-awareness messages on their websites, with trading apps joining the mandate from November 1. This is Project Jagrook — SEBI's nationwide investor-awareness programme — and it changes what you will literally see the next time you log in to trade.
> QUICK ANSWER: Under Project Jagrook, SEBI's October 1, 2026 circular requires all stock brokers to display SEBI-supplied investor-awareness messages alongside existing risk disclosures on their websites from October 5 to 31, 2026, and mandatorily on website landing pages from November 1. On trading apps, display is voluntary in October and becomes mandatory on alternate days from November 1.
What SEBI's October 1 circular actually says
The circular was issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, under Section 11(1) of the SEBI Act, 1992, and it sets out a phased rollout — not a big-bang switch: - October 5–31, 2026: brokers must display SEBI's investor-awareness messages plus the existing risk disclosures on their websites. - From November 1, 2026: the awareness messages become mandatory on website landing pages — the first screen a visitor sees. - Trading apps, October 5–31: display is voluntary. If a broker shows the messages on a given day, the risk disclosures are optional that day. - From November 1, 2026: on apps, the awareness messages and risk disclosures alternate — one set one day, the other the next — on the app landing page. The messages themselves are supplied by SEBI and may be modified periodically. Everything else about the existing risk-disclosure framework stays as it is — this is an addition, not a replacement. The circular builds on SEBI's May 19, 2023 circular that first made risk disclosures mandatory for brokers. Stock exchanges and depositories have been told to circulate the circular to their members and display the messages in the prescribed format themselves. What changes for you: the 5 things you will actually see
Forget the regulatory jargon. Here is what this looks like from your side of the screen: 1. From today, your broker's website starts carrying investor-awareness messages — short, SEBI-written notes about investing risks and investor rights. They sit next to the risk disclosures you may already scroll past. 2. From November 1, those messages move to the website landing page — impossible to miss on your way in. 3. On your trading app, October is a transition month: some brokers will show the messages, some will wait. From November 1, they become mandatory on the app landing page, alternating day-wise with risk disclosures. 4. If you use a mutual-fund-only platform that is not a stock broker, these specific display rules do not apply to it — the circular is addressed to stock brokers. 5. The content of the messages is SEBI's, not your broker's marketing team. If the wording ever changes, it will be because SEBI updated it — the circular allows periodic modification. The honest version: most investors will glance at these and move on. But the point of the exercise is the glance — a standardised, regulator-written nudge at the exact moment money is about to move. What is Project Jagrook — and why this week
Project Jagrook is SEBI's nationwide investor-awareness programme. The timing is not accidental: World Investor Week 2026 is observed from October 5 to 11 under the aegis of IOSCO, the global body of securities regulators. India's markets regulator is using that window — and the social-media teaser chain that ran through the weekend — to push awareness messages in front of the maximum number of eyeballs. It is worth noting what this is and is not. It is not a new rule about how you trade, what you can buy, or what your broker can charge. It is a disclosure-layer change: standardised awareness content, placed where investors cannot avoid it. Whether that moves the needle on investor behaviour is a fair question — but it is a question about outcomes, not about whether the requirement is real. It is real, and it starts today.4 investor-protection tools worth knowing this week
Since SEBI is asking for your attention this week, here are four tools from the regulator's own kit that many investors have never used: - Verify the broker's bank account before transferring money: SEBI has been pushing investors to confirm they are sending funds to the broker's registered account, not an imposter's. A two-minute check before a transfer is the cheapest fraud insurance there is. - SCORES: SEBI's online complaint-redress platform. If your broker or a listed company does not resolve your grievance, this is the escalation channel the regulator itself runs. - SMART ODR: the online dispute-resolution mechanism for the securities market — conciliation and arbitration without a courtroom. - MITRA: SEBI's platform to help investors trace inactive or unclaimed mutual fund folios — money that is yours but that you may have forgotten about. World Investor Week events across the country will walk through these in more detail. If you have never opened any of them, this week is a reasonable time to look. Also this week: markets reopen after a 3-day break
Context for the trading week ahead: Indian markets reopen today after the October 2 Gandhi Jayanti holiday. Both the Sensex and the Nifty sealed their eighth straight weekly loss on Thursday — Reuters describes it as the longest weekly losing streak in 25 years. Thursday's close: Sensex 71,909.70, Nifty 22,421.95. This morning's signals point to a calmer open: GIFT Nifty was at 22,639 around 7:57 AM IST, Brent crude eased to about $101.6, and softer US jobs data has pushed the probability of an October US rate hike below 25%. On Thursday, foreign investors sold ₹94.84 billion worth of Indian equities — their sixth straight selling session — while domestic institutions bought ₹100.42 billion. Two other items on the week's calendar: the RBI's monetary policy committee began its three-day meeting today, with the rate decision due Wednesday, October 7 (the current repo rate is 5.25%), and HDFC Bank has named Anup Bagchi — currently MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life — as its next CEO for a three-year term, the first external candidate to lead the bank.FAQs

What to do today
Open your broker's app and website and look for the new messages — they should be there from today on the website. Then take five minutes during World Investor Week to do two things most investors postpone: verify your broker's registered bank account details, and check whether you have any forgotten mutual fund folios on MITRA. Awareness weeks come and go; the tools stay.
