Income Tax Department data released on 15 October 2026 showed direct tax refunds rose 24.22% year-on-year to ₹2,65,199 crore as of 14 October 2026, while gross collections grew 14.89% to ₹16.03 lakh crore. Refunds are flowing nationally — yet that does not mean every individual refund is on time.
Quick Answer: If your AY 2026-27 ITR refund has not arrived, first check on incometax.gov.in whether your return is e-verified and processed, then confirm your bank account is pre-validated. Most delays trace to eight blocks — e-verification, processing, bank details, PAN status, TDS mismatch, a defective return, scrutiny, or a demand adjustment — each with a specific fix.

A worked example: where Rohan's ₹18,000 refund comes from

Rohan, a salaried employee in Bengaluru, had ₹1,20,000 deducted as TDS in FY 2025-26. His actual liability, after the standard deduction and new-regime rebate, was ₹1,02,000. The difference — ₹1,20,000 minus ₹1,02,000 — is his ₹18,000 refund. The maths is simple subtraction; the delay is usually in one of the eight blocks below. Rohan's own block was Block 3: his salary account had never been pre-validated on the portal.

How long should a refund normally take?

No single guaranteed date exists. Department guidance, as reported by Outlook Money, puts the general range at around four to five weeks after e-verification: an indication, not a promise. Mismatches, large claims, or older demands can take considerably longer.

How to check your ITR refund status, step by step

Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN as user ID, go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns, select Assessment Year 2026-27, and click View Details. Also check your portal inbox for intimations. Older guides point to the Protean (NSDL) TIN page, but it now covers only refunds decided on or before 31 March 2023 — for AY 2026-27, trust the portal.

The 8 most common blocks, and how to fix each one

1. Your ITR is not e-verified. Filing alone does not start processing — until you e-verify through Aadhaar OTP or net banking, the return is treated as not filed. Fix: complete e-verification for AY 2026-27. 2. Your return is still under processing. If the status reads "under processing", the CPC has not finished comparing your return with its records. Fix: no button speeds this up, and refiling only complicates matters. 3. Your bank account is not pre-validated, or its details are wrong. Refunds go only to a pre-validated account. Usual failures: never pre-validated, a name mismatching PAN records, a wrong IFSC, or a closed account. Fix: confirm the nominated account shows as pre-validated and active. 4. Your PAN is inoperative. Most commonly a PAN–Aadhaar linking issue, an inoperative PAN can fail a refund even when everything else looks right. Fix: check PAN status on the portal and resolve the linking issue, then re-check before requesting a reissue. 5. TDS claimed does not match Form 26AS or AIS. The CPC matches your claimed TDS and income against Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement. If a deductor reported a different figure or filed late, your credit will not reconcile. Fix: compare line by line, and take any deductor error up with the deductor. 6. Your return is defective, or a notice went unanswered. A defective-return notice pauses processing until you respond, and a Section 143(1) intimation may adjust — or remove — the refund you expected. Fix: read every portal notice in full and respond within its deadline. 7. Your return is under scrutiny or manual review. Large claims, figures diverging from AIS data, or a risk-parameter match can trigger scrutiny. It is not an accusation, but a human officer must clear the return. Fix: respond promptly and completely, with supporting documents. Never file a second return for the same year. 8. Your refund was adjusted against an outstanding demand (Section 245). The department may set off a refund against an outstanding demand — but only after an intimation stating the refund, the demand, and the proposed adjustment. Fix: check Pending Actions; if the demand is already paid or incorrect, object via the portal with proof.

If your refund failed: request a refund reissue

A failed refund differs from a delayed one: the department tried to pay and the bank credit bounced, usually for the bank reasons in Block 3. Refunds go through the State Bank of India as refund banker. Fix: correct and pre-validate the right account first, then go to Services → Refund Reissue, select the failed refund and the corrected account, and e-verify the request. Note the transaction ID.

When to raise a grievance

If every check above is clean and the wait is well beyond the general four-to-five-week guidance, put the delay on record: Grievances → Submit Grievance, department CPC-ITR, category Refund, with your assessment year and PAN. Keep the grievance ID. A grievance creates a traceable record, not a same-day payment instruction.
