A subscription you forgot about is still a subscription. With UPI AutoPay, the money leaves your account on schedule whether you opened the app that month or not. That is convenient for a SIP or a bill you always pay, and quietly expensive for a trial you meant to cancel. Quick Answer: UPI AutoPay is a standing instruction letting a merchant debit your bank account through UPI on a set date. You approve it once with your UPI PIN. Later debits up to ₹15,000 generally need no fresh OTP, and up to ₹1 lakh for mutual funds, insurance and credit-card bills. Cancel any mandate inside your UPI app.

What UPI AutoPay actually is

An e-mandate is your advance permission, not a blank cheque. When you set one up, you agree four things: who is being paid, how much at most per debit, how often, and until when. The merchant can then collect within those limits without asking you again each time. UPI AutoPay is built on the same e-mandate framework that covers cards and prepaid instruments. The Reserve Bank of India's Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026, issued in April 2026, consolidated those rules. The first transaction under a mandate must go through additional authentication, and you must be able to modify, pause or revoke the instruction.

The ₹15,000 and ₹1 lakh limits, explained simply

The limits are about whether a fresh OTP is needed for each debit, not about whether the debit is allowed at all. For most recurring payments — streaming, apps, utilities, gym memberships and similar subscriptions — debits up to ₹15,000 per transaction can run without an additional OTP after the mandate is registered. For mutual-fund investments, insurance premiums and credit-card bill payments, that no-fresh-OTP limit is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, when registered under an e-mandate. Above those limits, the debit needs additional authentication each cycle.

Worked example: the ₹997-a-month leak

Meet Priya, who earns ₹50,000 a month in Pune. She has three mandates she barely thinks about: a streaming service at ₹499 a month, a fitness app at ₹299 a month, and a cloud-storage plan at ₹199 a month. Added together, that is ₹997 a month. Over a year, it is ₹11,964. If she stopped using all three but left the mandates running for six months, she would pay ₹5,982 for services she did not use.

How to find every mandate in 5 minutes

Open the UPI app you used to approve the payment — that is usually where the mandate lives. Look for a section called AutoPay, Mandates or Automatic Payments, normally under your profile or payment settings. You should see the merchant name, the amount or maximum amount, the frequency and the next debit date.

How to cancel a mandate, app by app

Cancelling stops future debits under that mandate. Menu names vary slightly by app version, so treat these as the route to look for. Google Pay: tap your profile picture, open AutoPay, choose the mandate under Live, tap Cancel AutoPay and confirm with your UPI PIN. PhonePe: tap your profile icon, open AutoPay under payment settings, choose the mandate, tap Remove AutoPay or Cancel and confirm with your UPI PIN. Paytm: tap your profile icon, open UPI and Payment Settings, then UPI Automatic Payments, choose the mandate and tap Cancel Automatic Payment, confirming with your UPI PIN. BHIM or your bank's UPI app: look for Mandates or My Mandates, choose the mandate and tap Revoke, confirming with your UPI PIN.

Cancelling the payment is not cancelling the service

Cancelling a mandate stops the payment. It does not automatically cancel your subscription, insurance policy, SIP or loan instruction. The merchant may still show an unpaid bill, and a loan or SIP instruction may still be due through another route. So do both steps, in this order: first cancel the subscription or service with the merchant if you no longer want it, then cancel the mandate so no further debit can run. For a SIP or an insurance premium you intend to keep, leave the mandate alone and only change the amount or date through the fund or insurer's own process. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone who offers to cancel a mandate for you, and never follow a link in an unsolicited message to cancel one. Do it inside the official app only.

If a debit was not authorised

If money left your account under a mandate you did not approve, or for an amount above the mandate's maximum, act in this order. First, revoke the mandate in the app so it cannot debit again. Second, raise a dispute with your bank in writing, with the date, amount, merchant name and mandate reference. Third, keep every message and screenshot. If the bank does not resolve the complaint within 30 days, or its reply is unsatisfactory, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman free of charge through cms.rbi.org.in or by calling 14448. If the debit was part of a fraud, also report it on the national cybercrime helpline 1930 and at cybercrime.gov.in.
